Chief Frank Halcrow, for Kapawe'no First Nation, says there's nothing to hide and letters and petitions presented to him Jan. 20 will be dealt with as soon as possible.
92 band members signed two petitions: one asking for a forensic audit and a second to remove the process of hereditary chief in lieu of an elected one.
"I have no qualms about that. If the membership wants that it's their call. It's up to them if they want to fall under the Indian Act and go under an election process," says Halcrow of the second petition.
Halcow says every decision and audit was voted on and accepted by Kapawe'no members and his conscience is clear on every decision carried out.
"They voted on these issues, we only tried to fulfill them. From my perspective, once I vote on a subject matter, it's dealt with."
Petitions were presented to Halcrow by Debbie Chalifoux, Colin Chalifoux and Lyle Halcrow at the band office. Concerns about Kapawe'no's finances, on-going oil and gas issues and over band management had its members asking questions.
Those requests and questions will be answered, says Halcrow.
"Feb. 4 is the earliest Al Zariwny, lawyer, could schedule a meeting with Chief and council explaining trust options. A general meeting can be scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 5, explaining matters relating to trust deed disbursement," reads a letter of response from Halcrow, Jan. 20. "In due process those matters will be resolved."
Other issues, such as the purchase of a hockey school, Breakaway Futures, are over and done with, says Halcrow.
He says the band "assisted" with the school but did not purchase or partner in it.
Other outstanding concerns and questions will be dealt with, he assures.
"That was four years ago. That's a non-issue as far as I'm concerned."
For now, adds Halcrow, it's just a matter of the time that it takes to work everything out. Then, all the requests made of Chief and council will be answered.
" In due process these things will be dealt with."
