June 17 was a special day in High Prairie’s history as the official sod turning was held for the Gordon Buchanan Recreation Centre. Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pearl Calahasen did the honors by using a backhoe to turn the first sod. Dignitaries praised the cooperation between parties in seeing the project begin. Buchanan Lumber owner Gordon Buchanan, who donated $300,000 to the facility and the right to name the facility, first thanked the town for being there for him and his family through good and bad times. “This is my way of saying thank you,” says Buchanan. He adds that the facility reflects a new mood in the community. “A place to compete and a place to play. You never know when you might develop a player who can play for the Edmonton Oilers!”. The facility will house a second ice surface and gymnasium. More coverage will be published in next week’s South Peace News.
