Lesser Slave Police force disbanded

The Lesser Slave Lake Regional Police Department will be official closed effective Sept. 6.

After a routine check the Solicitor General and Public Security office found that the detachment had not been looking into some high risk files which included sexual and aggravated assault and attempted murder.

“It is our due diligence to make sure every community has adequate and effective policing,” says Christine Wronko, communications officer for the Solicitor General and Public Security office. “Through this report we found that this was not the case for this detachment. If you are a victim in these cases you expect police will investigate.”

The detachment was notified on June 9 that their contract had been terminated. The contract wasn’t due to expire until March 2009.

Wronko says officers currently are on duty until the closure but future plans for a new detachment in the community is under review.

“We are looking at our options,” says Wronko, adding after the closure calls for service will be dispatched to High Prairie, Faust, or Slave Lake RCMP.
