The High Prairie Regals won their fifth straight game and have taken command of first place in the North Peace Hockey League’s East Division as a result. The surging Regals defeated the Lakeland Eagles 7-4 on home ice Dec. 28 to stretch their lead to five points over the second place Peace River Stampeders, who do have one game in hand. The Regals increased their home record to an impressive 6-1-0-0 in the process. T.J. Cunningham was the big gun on this night as he scored three goals and enjoyed his finest game of the season. He scored a power play goal, shorthanded goal and even strength goal in the process. Captain Lance Gauchier also broke out of a slump by scoring twice and adding two assists. It’s another good sign among plenty the club is enjoying right now on their current hot streak. Davis Baroldi and Lee Lamouche added the other goals. Verny Cunningham Jr., Andrew Lamouche, Daniel Belcourt and Kelly Cunningham replied for the Eagles. Kelly Cunningham, playing in his first game of the season, added three assists. The Regals never trailed in the game. They led 2-1 after one period before Kelly Cunningham tied the game. However, T.J. Cunningham scored twice and Gauchier added a late second period goal and the Regals led 5-2. The Regals had by far the majority of play after the first period. Lakeland never got any sustained pressure at all. The Regals outshot the Eagles 21-10 in the second period as they took control of the game. The big victory for the Regals was their Dec. 21 win over the visiting Peace River Stampeders. The script was similar to those of recent games for the Regals. The game was tied 2-2 after one period and Peace River actually led 3-2 after two. But in the third, the Regals dominated with 20 shots and four straight goals before a late goal by Peace River ended the scoring. Justin Paul scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Regals while Darin Konelsky, Lee Lamouche and T.J. Cunningham added the others. Ryan McFaddin, Nick Laporte, Brian Erick and Tim Clayton replied for Peace River. The Regals next home game is Jan. 11 when they host the Stampeders. The Regals also travel to Peace River for another big game Jan. 6. If the Regals sweep those games, they will all but wrap up first place in the NPHL’s East Division.
