Police investigating homicide, woman in the custody

On Dec. 28, 2006, at 12:52 a.m., High Prairie RCMP along with High Prairie Ambulance, were dispatched to a reported stabbing at a residence in High Prairie. A male located inside the residence was initially treated at the hospital in High Prairie. Due to the seriousness of the injuries he was transported to an Edmonton hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. A post mortem examination has been completed; however, the cause of death is not being released at this time. The deceased has been identified as James Lawrence Helmer, 31, of High Prairie. Charges of second degree murder have been laid against Donna Lorraine Chalifoux, 40, of High Prairie, who is presently in police custody. Chalifoux was the common law wife of Helmer. The investigation remains ongoing at this time involving RCMP officers from Peace River, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, High Prairie and Faust.
