Olivia Blum was awarded the 2006 High Prairie Healthcare Auxiliary Society bursary valued at $2,000 just before Christmas.
Lois Couch, on behalf of the auxiliary, presented Blum with her cheque at the J.B. Wood Continuing Care.
Couch says the bursary is just one of many community functions the society provides each year.
“We’re a group of volunteers – men and women – who work toward improving surroundings and conditions of healthcare for the patients of High Prairie Hospital, residents of J.B. Wood Continuing Care and clients of Community Health Services,” says Couch.
To meet their goals the auxiliary society is involved in several activities. They include:
* providing furnishings for patients and resident’s rooms.
* providing special equipment for the care and treatment of patients, residents and clients.
* refurnish and redecorate a palliative care room at the hospital.
* purchasing supplies and stocking pop machines for patients, visitors and staff.
* taking the supply cart around for patients for the purchase of treats and needs.
* providing bursaries for persons training in a healthcare profession.
* providing lunch and gifts and assisting staff with annual birthday parties at J.B. Wood and Pleasantview Lodge.
* administering a memorial fund from donations received from families and friends.
* providing an opportunity for members to meet, discuss and learn more about healthcare concerns.
The auxiliary has been active for many years. They have purchased specialized equipment in the last five years including wheelchairs and cushions, an oxygen tester, walkers, an intravenous infusion pump, treadmill and a respirator machine.
Couch says $36,000 has been put away for a new J.B. Wood bus.
The remainder of the money will be available in 2007.
Couch says regular meetings are held in the hospital conference room on the fourth Tuesday of January, March, May,September and November.
