Another twist added to proposed water project

The recently-announced provincial cabinet by Premier Ed Stelmach has lent new hope for the M.D. of Big Lakes in their efforts to secure a water and sewer project in Grouard. Council is trying to get a deal done that would see the service constructed in the hamlet’s lower end. Stelmach’s recent announcement of failed leadership hopeful Dr. Lyle Oberg to the powerful portfolio of Minister of Finance has given council new optimism. Weeks ago, council was hoping that Oberg would win the leadership race for the PC party and become premier, but that honour went to Stelmach. Rumors persisted that Oberg made a commitment to the project as a member of government years ago and, council thought, as premier he would honor that commitment. But Stelmach won so council gave up hope until Oberg was appointed to cabinet. Now they agreed to try again after Grouard Councilor Fern Welch suggested so. Reeve Myler Savill suggested to send a “carefully worded” letter to the premier, Oberg and Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pearl Calahasen, who is on record knowing about Oberg’s commitment. Hopes that the project was eligible for funding under the Water for life Strategy were unsuccessful.
