High Prairie’s Bethel Baptist Church has found a new way to educate young children about faith. Stepping outside the box, this church and given a new angle to Sunday School for the children. Program coordinators of Camp Iwilligoway, Lynn Collard and Toni Noecker, decided the way to spread the word of God to younger generations is by working at their level. “People are our biggest resource, “ says Collard. “If we reach our children’s hearts we will be able to change the younger generations, and change people’s lives.” The new program at the church emphasizes the story of King David in the Bible and teaches the children in a different way that they are loved by God no matter what mistakes they make. “This is not your traditional Sunday school program. We bring teaching this story to the children’s level by making it fun, and exciting,” adds Collard. “Kids matter and we wanted to show them in a practical way that God is real and He is fun and exciting.” This is the second 10-week program like this that has been run by the church and Collard says it has been a success. “The children want to go. My kids are always asking me when we get to go or when the next one is going to start,” continues Collard. The program, which is run by a number of volunteers including youth, uses fun to help students understand the stories in the Bible. “The first 15 minutes of the day is spent with the children playing games with the youth, we then move into the teaching portion of the program, but the story is taught through skits, plays, and props, songs,” says Collard, adding they sometimes finish the day with a campfire or similar activities. “It really is just a lot of fun.” Collard adds the invitation is open to any children in the community, however children must be signed in and out by an adult. The program runs for 10 weeks from 9:45-10:50 a.m. on Sunday mornings.
