Emerald Trucking planning expansion south of H.P.

Emerald Trucking Enterprises is ready to begin construction on a new 60-acre trucking complex south of High Prairie. Ron and Linda Williscroft have applied to the M.D. of Big Lakes to rezone a portion of land to industrial district from agricultural district. If approved, it will pave the way for the company to create a new industrial truck shop and office. The M.D.’s Community Development officer, Pat Olansky, writes in a report to council that a tucking operation is not a permitted use nor a discretionary use within the current zoning. Thus, the land needs to be rezoned to accommodate the project. The M.D. will debate the application at their March 28 meeting. They will likely give first reading the bylaw, then set a public hearing date for April 25. The land is located on Tom Kasinec’s quarter section about five kilometers south of High Prairie just west of the High Prairie Airport. Emerald Trucking tried to purchase the Town of High Prairie’s Kryzalka quarter-section in 2004 in attempts to build the complex on that site. Had they been successful, and with town Town’s current annexation imminent, the complex would have eventually been located in town limits. However, council refused to sell the quarter section to Emerald Trucking. Reasons for the refusal were never disclosed.
