The new K-Grade 9 school being built in the Peavine Métis Settlement means better opportunities for students and adults in the community.
The $9.6 million school will be built to replace the current Bishop Routhier School, and principal Brian Dewar is more than happy.
“We are ecstatic. This school is going to open so many other doors for the community,” says Dewar. “This is long overdue.”
The plans for the school kept being put on the back burner for other projects or priorities. Dewar says if it weren’t for the push from a few interested parties this may not have happened for a couple more years.
“Pearl (Calahasen) really started pushing for it and so did Annette (Ramrattan),” says Dewar.
Dewar says he is especially excited about the technology that will be included into the new school.
“The sky is the limit with computers,” says Dewar. “There are a lot of innovative things we can introduce the students to with the computers. Right now the only classes that have computers are Grades 5-6, but in the new school we will have a computer lab. This way the kids will be able to start learning keyboarding skills earlier.”
Additionally, a couple of satellite classrooms are being added to the school.
“This is great, we will be able to have Robert Bateman or NASA talk or teach classes or do presentations about art or science,” says Dewar, adding adults in the community will be able to take schooling through the satellite. “Today you can take 80 per cent of your courses for a program via satellite so this something we will be able to offer everyone. This is just the tip of the iceberg.”
Dewar says he is hoping to be in the school by April 2008.
