Three High Prairie groups and one from Sunset House are among 22 projects receiving money from Peace Country Health. PCH announced its Community Action Grants recipients April 4. The Northern Association for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder received $2,500 for a FASD Awareness Walk in High Prairie. Display booths promoting healthy lifestyle choices will be on site and a healthy brunch will be served to all participants. The High Prairie Friendship Centre is receiving $4,000 to serve a healthy hot lunch to patrons of the centre and the hard to house population in the community. The program is called My Brother’s Keeper. The High Prairie and District Food Bank is receiving $4,000 which, along with corporate donations, will allow the food bank to supply its clients with vouchers to supplement the nutritional value of the hampers. Sunset House School is receiving $3,000 for its Heart Smart and Health Snack 2 program. The program offers students the opportunity to participate in a variety of outdoor activities like swimming, skating and skiing. School staff, students and parents will prepare unique, healthy snacks on designated days. In all, PCH gave $80,539 for 22 projects. Amounts up to $4,000 were awarded to various community, municipal, school, recreational and senior’s groups for projects that focus on healthy eating, active living and injury prevention. “I’m pleased we’re able to support these community-based initiatives to help improve the health of the residents in our community,” says Sandra Guzzwell, public health manager – Health Promotion and Dental. “The Community Action Grants empower communities to respond to the needs of their residents.” The next closing date for applications is in December.
