Many lanes to choose from
Pastor Don Porter - Gods Church of Sucker Creek
In my last article, I talked about the highway to heaven. I mentioned that there are many paths that a person can take in this life but that there is only one that will lead them to life after death.
Proverbs 14:12 in fact says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death”.
There is a road to heaven. Jesus said, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.” (Matthew 7:13)
So ask yourself, are you on the right road? How would you know if you are on the right road?
In the above scripture, Jesus was saying there is a clear way to walk in life. Certainly, He was not advocating the fuzzy thinking of our time that claims that all roads lead to God, that says, “You have your truth, I have my truth, and eventually we will all end up in the same place.”
Some people seem to think the road to heaven is like a mega-freeway where we all have our lanes, and we are all going to get there eventually. Some have a lane of religion. Others have a lane of philosophy. Others have a lane of something else. And the pervading belief about this freeway to heaven is that we can change lanes if we want to: I don’t like this philosophy lane. . .I am going to go over to the religion lane. . .now I am going to go over to this other lane. . .
But that is not the way Jesus described it. He said, “Broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.”
You can keep changing lanes all you want if you are on the wrong highway and you will still be lost. How do we get on the right road?
First, you have to take the right and only on ramp to the highway to heaven. To get on the highway you must accept that you are a sinner and in need of a Savior. But not just any savior! You need to accept Jesus Christ the Son of God as the one who died as atonement for your sins and rose again that you may have eternal life. To get on the highway you need to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
Some say, “ I will find my own way.” They are like men who are too proud to ask for directions. Maybe they will get where they are heading. But it can be the way of death. That is how they envision it. However, the descent into hell is so gradual that many do not suspect that the road they are following is a downward path. The road Jesus offers is a narrow one. If you have not yet chosen to walk on that narrow road, take the next exit from your mega-freeway. Then take the only on ramp to the right highway by accepting Jesus as your Saviot.
Once you are on the right path you need to choose to walk this path with Jesus. He will lead you though His directions contained in the Bible. The Bible is actually a road map on how to get from where you are right now to eternity in heaven. God knows where you are, even if you don’t, and He also knows the only way for you to get to Him. God the Creator knew this before He created the heavens and the earth. And that’s why He created His Plan on how to reconcile mankind who had taken a detour through sin and bring them back to the highway to heaven. To do this God created a bridge which is the cross.
But God leaves the decision on whether you take the bridge up to you. You can choose to walk with Christ and spend eternity in heaven or you can choose to continue on your current road which end is the way of death. Choose life today!
