The torch has been passed to Darcy Charrois and Tyler Plante.
The pair won gold medals in intermediate men’s doubles at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association Badminton Provincials in Calgary May 4-5 thus continuing the long winning tradition at the school.
In round robin play, Charrois and Plante won two of three matches to place second in their pool. They defeated the Northeast Zone team of Dylan Kitz and Zach Soprovich 15-7, 10-15, 15-9 and the Calgary team of Adam Kammer and Collin Swain 15-12, 17-15 but lost to the South Central team of Neil Giles and Karl Ho 15-5, 15-10. That created a three-way tie for first place with Northeast being awarded first, the Pratt team second and South Central third. Ironically, Pratt placed behind the team they beat in round robin play where the team they lost to was out of the competition.
In the semi-final, Charrois and Plante defeated the South team of David Landry and Thomas Walker 15-7, 15-2. Landry and Walker had gone undefeated in their pool.
The final pitted Charrois and Plante against Dylan Kitz and Zach Soprovich once again. The final result was the same with Charrois and Plante winning in three games 9-15, 15-8, 15-8.
Plante says there were few adjustments in the final after losing the first game.
“We were just a little nervous,” he says before the pair settled down to play their game.
Plante says winning the medals was a nice accomplishment and far exceeded his early expectations.
“I thought we’d get whupped,” he says.
Charrois and Plante both agreed their net game was the key to victory.
“I thought we had a pretty good team,” says Charrois, who has been to provincials before.
Charrois is the son of Don and Carol Charrois; Plante’s parents are Tom and Tanya.
