‘Handshake agreement’ in place to construct hospital on Peavine land

The chair of Peace Country Health says a deal is very close to being completed that would see the new High Prairie Hospital located on land owned by Peavine Metis Settlement. Marvin Moore said during an interview June 6 that a tentative agreement was reached “three or four weeks ago” and that lawyers for both parties were examining the agreement. “We haven’t signed an agreement yet,” says Moore. “We think we’ve bought the land,” adds Moore. “We have a handshake agreement.” One day earlier at their monthly board meeting, PCH agreed to enter into a purchase agreement with Peavine Metis Settlement for 13 acres of land in High Prairie’s east end. PCH says the land is well-suited for the new hospital with good access from several directions. “With the new site now very close to being secured, development planning will continue at an aggressive pace,” reads a news release issued June 7 by PCH. PCH says they would like to begin construction this fall and they are working with Alberta Infrastructure to determine if construction can proceed. “We’ll turn the sod one of these days,” says Moore. Efforts to contact Peavine Metis Settlement chair Ken Noskey for comment were unsuccessful. A community open house will be held June 18 at the downtown Elks Hall from 7-8:30 p.m. to update the community about the hospital project.
