Pratt honours top academic, athletic students

E.W. Pratt High School honored some of its best academic and athletic students June 5 at their annual spring awards ceremony.
The day began with Krista Long and Megan Caouette being presented with awards for hardest workers in student government. Kim Sawchyn then received the Fred and Wade award for her dedication to student government.
Grad committee, class historians and yearbook members all received certificates for their work during the school year.
Then, a lengthy list of students who qualified for the honors club received their certificates. Teachers urged all students to try their best next year to qualify for certificates and the trip to Jasper.
Members of Pratt’s successful sports teams were also recognized for their achievements. Members of each team received certificates as well as a few chosen students who also received leadership awards. They were Jenny-Lee Ehman in cross-country running, Devyn Jones in ladies volleyball, Nick Hawryliw in men’s volleyball, Jamie Greer in ladies basketball, Robert Mills in men’s basketball, Mario Dube in badminton and Geoffrey Beaudry in track and field.
Susan Cardinal-Lamouche, elected secretary of the Metis Settlements General Council, and Diane Desjarlais, representing Metis student training initiative, attended to present the school’s eight Metis students with sashes. They included East Prairie’s Brett Anderson, Kyle Carifelle, Chevy Cunningham and Nina Cuthbert and Peavine’s Janis Cunningham, Stephanie Cunningham, Melissa Noskey and Lindsey Stuart.
Shylo Boucher and Kelsey Marquardt received High School Rodeo awards and Garrett Zahacy received the Volunteer Extraordinaire award for always being there to volunteer at Pratt athletics functions.
Badminton gold medal provincial medallists Darcy Charrois and Tyler Plante were also honoured by the school for their efforts.
MP Brian Jean sent gifts for each graduate. The keychain included a stone with an animal imprint and an “uncut” horse key representing the Chargers horse.
Major academic awards were then presented. Risa Iwasiuk received the Annah and Edward Pratt Memorial award sponsored by St. Mark’s Anglican Church. It’s presented to a deserving student with dedication to community involvement, has special talent and contributes greatly to school activities.
Laura Wright was then presented with the Most Improved Student award. The former school dropout displayed excellent citizenship and improvement in scholastic achievement, attitude, participation and social behavior. Presenter Leigh Davies commended Wright for her achievement.
Kelsey Sloan was presented with the E.W. Pratt Student Spartan award. It is presented to a student judged to be courteous and respectful to everyone, and obliging to fellow students and staff. She also exemplifies school spirit and is positive and encouraging to all.
Meghan Caoette won the Student Dedication Award. She showed exceptional initiative and was active in social and academic affairs. She persevered in the pursuit of her goals and promoted activities that improved the live and well-being of the school and its students.
Chelsea Nygaard was presented with the Unsung Hero award which goes to the student who works diligently on their studies and eligible for graduation in the current year. Nygaard is involved as an athlete, team manager, leader, volunteer, etc. and taken on a number of volunteer roles in the school for the benefit of others.
Mario Dube won the Lynn Edwards Sports award for his outstanding athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship on and off the athletics fields.
The Merit Contractors Association CTS award went to Tate Severson. The award recognizes Severson’s achievement, and promotes construction as a career and encourages cooperation between education and industry. It’s presented to the Grade 12 student with top standing in a construction related class. Severson also showed leadership in the classroom and a cooperative attitude with students and teachers.
Brett Anderson was awarded the Member of Parliament Brian Jean award. He was deemed to overcome the greatest obstacle of any sort. Anderson also works hard and exhibits the most determination.
Cheyenne Johnson received the Premiers Citizenship award for displaying outstanding characteristics in the areas of academic ability and leadership in school sponsored activities. She also participates in community and school extra-curricular activities and demonstrates a willingness to place the good of others above personal ambitions.
