Mayor resigns, takes on new challenge

John Brodrick’s reign as mayor of High Prairie ended June 17 after tendering his resignation. “This was not an easy decision, after 40-plus years in High Prairie, but Norma (his wife) and I will be moving to Manning,” says Brodrick in a news release. Brodrick is taking on a new challenge by becoming the Town of Manning’s CAO effective Aug. 7. “This will be different for me, to be receiving direction from politicians, instead of providing that direction, but I look forward to this new opportunity.” He adds another good thing about the move is they will be returning to the community where much of Norma’s family reside. Brodrick worked for 27 years as the manager of Buchanan Lumber. He has seen the company through many challenges in the last few decades. Brodrick entered municipal politics by winning a council seat in 1998. In 2001, he successfully ran for mayor by defeating Michael Smith 458-201. He was re-elected by acclamation in 2004. “Sadly, I will not complete my last few months as mayor for High Prairie,” says Brodrick, “but I am confident that Deputy Mayor Rick Dumont will be able to handle the last few months without a problem. We have a great council and competent staff in place, so I am confident that the Town will be in good hands.” As with all politicians, he realizes some may not have liked his performance as mayor. He is, however, ready to defend his record. “Whether people have liked the way I worked as mayor or not, I can say honestly that I always gave it my best. I never stopped working for the best interests of our community, whether I was in High Prairie, Edmonton, or Ottawa. “More importantly, I know that I am leaving this community better that it was handed to me, and every citizen in High Prairie should expect every future mayor and council to do the same.”
