St. Andrew’s School had some excitement at 9 a.m. on Sept. 6, as the new fire alarm system went off, forcing the teachers and students to evacuate the building. A fire truck from the High Prairie Fire Department arrived on scene a short time later. The new fire alarm system had malfunctioned. Principal Marc Lamoureux is dealing with this issue while overseeing renovations to the school’s library and welcoming new staff. The new staff members are: * Rachel Begley - Grade 5 and 6 Program * Leah Anne Srigley - Elementary and Junior Girls Phys. Ed. * Tim Crabbe - Knowledge and Employability * Michael Allan - Senior Math and Science * Terry Hogan - Senior Math and Science * Robert Levy - Junior and Senior Physical Education * Lisa Liznick - Art and Information Processing * Julie Morita - French * Leanne Morgan - Special Education * Irfan Valliani - School Computer Tech Renovation work on the library is almost finished. A new circulation desk and shelving are being installed, the ceiling and floor have been replaced and the library has been repainted. The junior high foyer has been repainted and new seating and flooring have been installed. In addition, new stainless steel counters and workspaces have been installed for the Food Studies program. Concerning academic performance, the school continues to focus on improving students’ reading comprehension. “Reading comprehension is an issue that affects all grades,” says Lamoureux. “A number of students are having difficulty with reading comprehension. People are moving away from reading books and we’re going to try and encourage them to read more books.” Last year in the junior high, one of the teachers and students read a novel together every day. By the end of the school year, they had read seven books like Animal Farm by George Orwell. St. Andrew’s School continues to participate in the Registered Apprenticeship Program. High school students can earn credits while they are earning hours for their apprenticeships. The school needs to recruit community/parental coaches for junior boys volleyball and senior girls volleyball. Those wishing to apply should have some related coaching experience, accreditation or be willing to acquire it. The applicants will also be subject to criminal record and child intervention checks. Contact Lamoureux at St. Andrew’s School at 523-4595 to apply.
