Former High Prairie Mayor George Keay is opposing current mayor Rick Dumont in the Oct. 15 municipal election. Both filed nomination papers Sept. 17 expressing interest in the mayor’s chair. Dumont has sat on council for nine years including since early August as mayor. Meanwhile, Keay sat as mayor from 1998-2001. Five citizens join four incumbent councillors in filing for council seats. Jeff Burgar, Mike Poulter, Hector Renaud, David Vanderwell and Wilfred Willier are challenging incumbents Arnold Aarts, Wayne Forrester, Leonard Olson and James Waikle. Electors will choose six councillors from the list of nine candidates. Of the five challenging, three have experience on High Prairie town council. Burgar, Poulter and Willier have all served before. Councillor Mike Daubert was one of only two politician who did not file papers to serve another term in High Prairie, the M.D of Big Lakes or both school boards. High Prairie School Division trustee Linda Duchesneau was the other. In the M.D. of Big Lakes, interest was not near the town’s. Five of nine councillors are elected by acclamation including Ken Killeen in Kinuso, David Marx in Prairie Echo - Salt Prairie, Randy Ehman in Gilwood South - Sunset House, Alvin Billings in High Prairie North - Banana Belt and Ray Dupres in Enilda. Elections will be held in four other wards. In Faust, incumbent Violet Campiou is opposed by Walter Garrick. In Joussard, former reeve and councillor Guy L’Heureux opposes current Reeve Myler Savill and Trina Willier. In Gilwood – Triangle, incumbent Ken Matthews is opposed by former councillor Joyce Dvornek. In Grouard, former councillor Ralph Ralph Courtoreille opposes Marlene Lamouche and Fern Welch, current councillor. In High Prairie School Division, all local seats were elected by acclamation. HPSD chair Joyce Dvornek and Rick Neidig were elected in High Prairie while Rudy Willier will be the new trustee from Lakeside representing Joussard, Faust and Kinuso. Holy Family Catholic Regional School Division trustees were also elected by acclamation locally. George Ostermeier and Carmelle Lizee will continue to serve on the board.
