Golfers from Prairie River Junior High School and St. Andrew’s School all came home with medals from the Peace Country Golf Zone Championships on Sept. 24 in High Level.
PRJH’s team won the team gold medal with a score of 305 while St. Andrew’s won bronze scoring 328. Spirit River won silver scoring 316.
PRJH’s team was comprised of Alex Filion, Quentin Guttinger, Kyle Olansky, Jacob Pratt and Devon Quartly and coached by Kelly Carlson and Jocelyn Heyde. St. Andrew’s was comprised of Jonathan Belyan, Sean Boisson, Mitchell McLean and Mike Ochran and coached by Mike Boisson.
Scoring was different this year as the three best scores from each team for each hole was calculated. This way, organizers deemed that each golfer had a strong possibility of contributing to their team rather than having their entire round abolished.
Individually, three golfers returned home with medals. Quentin Guttinger’s 95 earned him a silver medal, just one shot behind the 95 fired by Spirit River’s Kevin Martin.
Michael Ochran of St. Andrew’s and Alex Filion of PRJH tied for third and shared bronze medals with 105 scores. Organizers decided to not break a tie using the countback system.
Jacob Pratt of PRJH placed fifth with a score of 109. Other scores were as follows: Kyle Olansky shot 111; Sean Boisson shot 115; Mitchell McLean shot 116; Devon Quartly shot 120; and Jonathan Belyan shot 146;
Both schools did not enter any female golfers. The team title and individual titles went to Valleyview Hillside School. Hailey Grotkowski and Kellie Gallivan tied for gold shooting 153.
