The Last WinterLights? Volunteers needed or this may be the final celebration

The High Prairie Beautification Society requires more volunteers to help with this year’s Winter- Lights Festival, or it could be cancelled next year. Mike Poulter, a member of the High Prairie Beautification Society, which organizes the Communities In Bloom summer program and the WinterLights Festival, makes this prediction. “It is a distinct possibility. We will have to consider concentrating our efforts on either the winter light up or the summer beautification program,” says Poulter. “I would be a lot happier if we could keep both going. But, quite frankly, despite our pleas, despite our requests, we are getting no help whatsoever from the community as a whole to run the organization.” Poulter says the Society could use another 12 volunteers to serve in positions like treasurer, secretary and bingo coordinator. He also says that there are certain times of the year when people just go, go, go, because there’s so much that has to be done, and all at the same time. He adds that he has spent 35 hours in the last few weeks volunteering, mainly for the WinterLights Festival, but also for Citizens On Patrol. But Poulter appreciates the support of those people and organizations that have helped with the WinterLights Festival. For instance, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints washes the Christmas lights for the event. The WinterLights Festival will start on Nov. 23, following the third annual Santa Claus parade. For more information, or to volunteer for the WinterLights Festival, contact Mike Poulter at 291-0004.
