Gift Lake’s first high school graduate was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at Gift Lake Recognition Night Nov. 1. Jen Laderoute’s award topped an evening of celebration in which Gift Lake Metis Settlement Council honours achievements by each of its members. Other major award winners were: Pauline Flett, Elder-of-the-Year; Edward Shaw, Settlement Employee-of-the-Year; Audrey Anderson, Teacher-of-the-Year; Tyler Anderson, Youth-of-the-Year; and Joe Badger, Community Member-of-the-Year. Laderoute graduated high school at the age of 16 years. She left Gift Lake for about 20 years to begin her career in the area of administration and management with employees such as Alberta Vocational Centre, Metis Settlements Tribunal and the High Prairie Friendship Centre. Lucky for Gift Lake, Laderoute returned. “Since her return she has accomplished many things for our community,” reads her profile. “During her time as our Settlement Administrator she spearheaded the four-day Metis Days and Homecoming of 1994 that is still remembered today. Many of us don’t realize, but our Head Start, Early Intervention and Prenatal Nutrition programs are here in Gift Lake today because of her skills in proposal writing.” Laderoute was also the force behind the successful People for Comm-Unity Society that raised money for the walkway and other projects. Flett took some good-natured teasing in her selection as Elder-of-the-Year. As Gift Lake’s ‘Energizer Bunny’, Flett is always there when there is something happening in the settlement, whether it’s a community event, a school function or fundraiser. “She loves to volunteer, she’s one person that Community Services can rely on to volunteer for their events,” reads her profile. Flett also lives a healthy lifestyle and does traditional activities such as making dry meat and smoked-fish. And, she finds time to be an active member in her church. Community Member-of-the-Year Joe Badger has served on the Gift Lake Fire Department for a long time. He shows his commitment to his community through his volunteer involvement with the department. He is almost always there when the they get called out to a fire, an accident or other community emergency. Badger is a respected role model in the community by the way he lives his life. You can see him mowing the grass on a hot summer day during the summer months, he keeps our school spotless! Shaw was selected partly for his long-time employment with the Settlement. “For this man, family comes first,” reads his profile. “He’s a dedicated husband and father. This man works 24/7, weekends and on holidays.” “For more than 15 years, this employee has been dependable and consistent. We can tell by the quality of our water supply when Edward has to be away for a period of time.” Gift Lake always honours its youth and the selection of Tyler Anderson is no exception. He is cited as being a good role model for the older youth group as well as for the younger boys in our community. “He has a vision for our youth and children and he has made a tremendous impact in a short time,” reads his profile. Tyler Anderson has a knack of getting other youth involved and trying new things. The HOPE Play was a prime example – a play on suicidal awareness that made an impact on the community members both young and old. Tyler Anderson has clear goals in what he wants to do with his life and has made plans to achieve those goals. Audrey Anderson’s selection as Teacher-of-the-Year was based on her love of children. “(She) is one who is great with the kids, they love her and we all know she loves them,” reads her profile. “This teacher has a passion for teaching, she cares about her students and does a lot of extra activities with them. When students are having problems or not doing well academically, she will pay a home visit to talk to the parents.” She also goes the extra mile to raise money and organize field trips for her students. She teaches her students Metis dances and has a dance group going each year. Most recently she applied for a grant to buy outfits for the dance group.
