A fur-knotted dog like Princess Fiona is the type of pet that Gayle Lewis sees all the time.
Lewis recently received Princess Fiona from the Prairie Animal Rescue Society to get her fur trimmed.
However, the dog’s fur was so knotted she had to be clipped down to her skin. This left her with sores all over her body.
Lewis blames the owners for not grooming the dog. Grooming is a very important part of looking after an animal, says Lewis.
She runs a pet grooming service, Pawsitive Pups & Scruffy Mutts, at her farm on the east side of High Prairie. She also works for PARS and grooms stray animals free of charge while in their care.
Lewis grooms small and medium-sized dogs for her business. She charges $45 for a small dog up to 40 pounds. This includes a haircut, bath, clipping the nails, cleaning their ears and expressing the anal glands. She charges $60 for medium-sized dogs, depending on the amount of work required.
Lewsi recommends Fins, Feathers & Furs in Peace River for large dogs.
She will groom cats if they are co-operative.
Lewis started Paws- itive Pups & Scruffy Mutts in the summer of 2006 and has steady work. She gets clients from all over the region including Slave Lake, Girouxville and Valleyview.
She works by appointment and recommends booking one to two weeks in advance. However, she will take an animal on short notice, depending on the situation.
