Over $13,000 was raised at the annual High Prairie Lions Club TV/Radio Auction, says one of its volunteers.
Terry Rosser says the figure is estimated but confident the goal will be reached.
“My computer crashed with 10 minutes to go,” says Rosser. “But that will be pretty close to the mark.”
The auction, now in its 16th year, was held Nov. 24-25 at the High Prairie Royal Canadian Legion Hall. Lions Club and other volunteers were kept busy with a steady stream of phone calls, especially toward the end of the auction.
“The last half-hour was awesome,” says Rosser. “It was almost insane.”
Bidders were obviously trying to pick up that last bargain at the best price.
“To all the bidders, donators, businesses and the community, we really appreciate your support,” says Rosser.
The auction was broadcast live on KBS-TV Channel 2 and CKVH.
Each year the Lions choose a couple of community organizations to help host the auction.
In turn, they receive a donation for their efforts.
This year’s groups were the Children’s Resource Council and the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder group.
Rosser says plans are already underway for next year’s auction.
“Next year we won’t be the same weekend as the Grey Cup,” says Rosser. “We’re going to move it back one week.”
She adds that next year’s recipients for the money raised from the auction will be the Northern Alberta Brain Injury Society, High Prairie Victim Services and Marigold Enterprises.
Rosser says the decision was already made to give the chosen groups will have more time to prepare for the auction.
