The High Prairie and District Food Bank Society serves many families at Christmas time, and this year is no exception.
Kim Dumont, the food bank coordinator, says 47 food hampers were provided at Christmas last year. They average 35 hampers per month for the rest of the year.
The food bank does not do Christmas hampers with turkeys. Rather, they provide regular food hampers at Christmas time, just like at all other times of the year.
But the High Prairie and District Child- ren’s Resource Council does provide the Christmas hampers with turkeys. They also provide children’s Christmas gifts.
“We still have a need, even though people get hampers through them. They give so many hampers out over there,” says Dumont.
“But some people don’t (make) the deadline, so they come over here. We’ll still help them out with hampers. But we don’t do the turkeys.”
One week of food is supplied in each hamper.
The food bank can provide items like stuf -fing, cranberry sauce and gravy for the holiday season. However, the food bank is short of juice boxes, canned vegetables, rice, pasta, instant potatoes, peanut butter and other items.
Dumont emphasizes that children like juice boxes and sna- cks during Christmas.
“That’s one thing I find with children, that they snack lots. That’s one thing we’re really low on.”
The food bank also accepts IGA coupons so that they can obtain more quantities of items. Or the families can receive the coupons.
The food bank is open 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Monday thru Friday. In addition to the food bank, donations can be dropped off at the Simard Insurance Agencies Ltd.
The food bank will be closed Dec. 22-26. It will be open for regular hours on Dec. 27 and 28. It will then be closed Dec. 29 to Jan. 1, and re-open Jan. 2.
