Students at St. Andrew’s School and High Prairie Elementary received a lesson in being cautious with energy.
The ATCO Energy Theatre group put on a “Super Power” play at both schools on Nov. 21.
The cast of characters includes Cody Michie as “The Kid” and Jenna Dykes as superhero “Power Woman.” Their archenemies are “Rocket Socket,” “P-Yeww” and “Carbon Monoxide,” all played by Rachel Bowron.
“The Kid” is obsessed with comics, and he plays out hazardous safety scenarios with “Power Woman” and the archenemies. “Power Woman” has to explain the consequences if “The Kid” doesn’t listen to her.
For instance, “Rocket Socket” tries to get “The Kid” to plug in an appliance with a frayed cord. But “Power Woman” tells him the appliance won’t be able to handle the electric load. He listens to her reasoning.
In another scenario, “Carbon Monoxide” says she will spread her poison throughout the house, and can lodge herself in a poorly vented fireplace. But “The Kid” and “Power Woman” fight back by emphasizing the importance of placing carbon monoxide detectors on every floor in the house.
The cast had the children sing a Rap song with them at the end of the play.
Mary McNabb, the district service representative for ATCO Electric in High Prairie, was at the play. She had children answer questions based on the play, and they received prizes.
The ATCO Energy Theatre is travelling through northern and central Alberta in November. Its purpose is to educate children about the hazards of electricity and natural gas, and how to avoid them.
“Safety is our number one priority, and ATCO Energy Theatre is a tangible part of that commitment,” says ATCO Gas President Jerome Engler in a news release.
“The program reinforces information presented in safety education programs already offered to schools by both ATCO Gas and ATCO Electric, as well as science information related to the Alberta school curriculum (Grades 4-6).”
