Approximately 200 people attended the United Church’s annual spaghetti dinner and silent auction Nov. 30.
It was a chance for people to visit and contribute to a charitable cause, says Pat Riegel, one of the organizers.
“Pre-Christmas dinners are always a good fundraiser,” says Riegel. “The people who come to eat will also visit and hang around for the silent auction.”
Around 30 volunteers organized this year’s dinner, which took about six weeks to prepare. One group spent the morning of Nov. 30 preparing the spaghetti sauce, which is made from a secret recipe, says Riegel. In addition to the main course, there was salad, garlic toast and dessert.
The silent auction was held after the dinner.
Many in the church’s congregation donated items, ranging from Christmas ornaments to gift baskets and small kitchen appliances.
Riegel says this is the third year for the silent auction. This year’s auction had the second-highest number of items.
Baked goods were also available for sale.
Shirley Kuefler, church treasurer, declined to disclose how much money was raised from the dinner and auction.
She says 10 per cent of the proceeds will go to Santa’s Little Helper, which is the Christmas food hamper program run by the High Prairie and District Children’s Resource Council.
Other fundraisers held by the United Church are the “Simply You” showcase for women in February and a garage sale in April.
