The High Prairie Regals did not disappoint their fans on Dec. 6, winning 9-6 over the Falher Pirates at home. Lawrence Anderson added four goals and an assist to his tally in the game. He opened the scoring on a power play nearly eight minutes into the first period. Working with Tim Cunningham and Tyler Shantz, Anderson moved the puck down the ice and fired a shot into the net. But six minutes later, Anderson went down on the ice after a Pirates player speared him in the inner thigh. However, he returned to his bench without help. Then the Pirates scored back-to-back goals. Jason Bouchard got control of the puck on a breakaway and put it high in the net with Deric Maunier drawing the assist. Kevin Desbiens then scored with assistance from Denis Rochon and Jason Bouchard. The Regals had the last word in the first period. With less than two minutes remaining, Ryan Erasmus fired a shot on net and it was stopped, but Dwayne Haugen put the rebound in from the side. It was his first goal in 35 games dating back to Nov. 5, 2005 at home against Dawson Creek in a 9-5 win. The score was 2-2 at the end of the first period. The Regals trounced the Pirates in the second period. Just 11 seconds in, T.J. Cunningham scored with assistance from Lawrence Anderson and Tyler Shantz. Less than a minute later, Ryan Erasmus scored a power play goal with assistance from Rocky Collins and Ryan Trimble. Rollie Gladue fired a shot high into the net four minutes later, while Ryan Erasmus received his second assist of the game, and Tyler Shantz received his third. Play sea-sawed for several minutes. Then Shantz took the puck down the ice, pulled the trigger and found his mark. He was unassisted on this play. Anderson got his second goal of the game less than two minutes later, while Ryan Trimble and Stew Cunningham assisted. But Anderson went to the box just moments later for high sticking. The Pirates had an opportunity to make up for their many unanswered goals, but several attacks on the Regals’ net produced no results. That is, until Denis Rochon scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal with less than two minutes remaining. Nonetheless, the Regals were still ahead 7-3. It looked as though the Pirates would make a comeback early in the third period. Less than one minute in, Kevin Desbiens scored a power play goal with assistance from Jason Bouchard and Shawn Gervais. Thirty seconds later, Daniel Aubin flicked the puck into the net, and Geoffrey Chalifoux assisted. However, any hopes that the Pirates had of evening the score were soon dashed. Lawrence Anderson scored his third and fourth goals of the game later in the period. T.J. Cunningham received an assist on one goal, and Stew Cunningham received one for the other. Jason Bouchard gave the Pirates one last spark of life when he scored with just three minutes remaining, and Kevin Desbiens assisted on this play. Despite this, the Regals held on to win the game by a score of 9-6. Shots on goal for the game were 40-34 in favour of the Regals. Coach Brian Martinson says his team had better fore-checking in the second period. He adds some of his players, such as captain Lance Gauchier and goalie Cannon Cunningham, were absent from the game due to other commitments. Other players had to fill in the gaps and demonstrate they could play. “It was a good effort for the lineup we had,” says coach Martinson. The Regals now have a 6-2-1-0 record for the season and sit in first place in the NPHL’s East Division. They will host the Valleyview Jets on Dec. 13, then play four straight road games beginning in Grim- shaw Dec. 15.
