Foul trouble, injury sinks the Saints

It was a terrific way to start the season if you were a Prairie River Raiders’ fan.
But if are a St. Andrew’s fan, heartbreak is the order of the day.
The hometown Raiders won the Smoky River Junior High School Basketball League season opener for both teams 41-38. The game was a seesaw affair with both teams taking the lead, only to see the other team mount a comeback.
St. Andrew’s jumped out to the early lead and led 9-6 in the first quarter. PRJH rattled off six straight points to take a 12-9 lead.
By the midway point of the second quarter, St. Andrew’s had assumed control of the game and led 28-22. They carried a 32-26 lead into the third quarter after the halftime break.
The Raiders rallied quickly in the third quarter and ran off eight straight points to take a 34-32 lead. They would never trail again.
The Saints, however, kept battling and tied the game at 34-34 and 38-38.
However, it was Kalelynn Patenaude’s shot which sealed the deal with 33 seconds left. Kelissa Gets added a free throw to complete the margin of victory.
The Saints suffered some bad luck down the stretch. Brittany Belcourt suffered was is thought to be sprained ankle when she tumbled to the floor. Kiersten Noskey fouled out and the Saints were left without two starters.
The Raiders took advantage and rallied to win.
Patenaude scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Raiders. Molly Marquardt added 10 points, Getz five. Tanisha Halcrow had four points while Destinie Getz and Morgan Marquardt each scored two points.
Keyana Calahason replied with 18 points for the Saints in matching Patenaude’s game high score. Noskey had eight points before fouling out. Elishai Snyder, Kim Somerville and Brayden Noskey each added four points as the Saints received scoring from only five players.
Both teams do not play over the school Christmas break but are back in action Jan. 9. PRJH travels to McLennan to play the Eagles while the Saints play at home for the first time this season as they host Valleyview St. Stephen’s School. Game time is 4 p.m.

The Prairie River Raiders jumped out to a quick lead and never trailed in winning their season opener 51-39 over their crosstown rivals, the St. Andrew’s Saints.
The game marked the first boy’s action in Smoky River Junior High School Basketball League action this season.
PRJH led 19-8 after the first quarter. They used their speed and a lack of effort defensively at the St. Andrew’s end of the court in bolting out to a big lead.
However, as the game wore on the Saints started to adjust. The bottom line was, for the last three quarters the teams were only one point apart.

maw led all scorers with 19 points while Amadaus Giroux chipped in with 16 points of his own. Offensively, they did most of the damage.
Jarett Abram and Zach Auger each had six points while Harold Johnson and Colin Bjornson netted two points each.
Jared Dumont scored a team high 15 points for the Saints. The rest of the scoring was spread out between four players. Zak Stokes had nine points, Justin Monahan eight, Mike Ochran four and Josh Perry three points.
Both teams head into the Christmas break and will not resume action until Jan. 9.
The Raiders travel to McLennan to play the Eagles while the Saints play their home opener against Valleyview St. Stephen’s School.
