The Rycroft Sharks bit deep into the High Prairie Legionnaires on Dec. 14, swimming home with a 7-1 victory.
Arlen Quartly, the Legionnaires’ coach, says the loss was due to a lack of effort on his team’s part.
However, he also acknowledged that the Sharks had strong positional play, too.
“We didn’t come together as a team today. But Rycroft is a good team, and they play well positionally. We weren’t able to defend against that,” says Quartly.
High Prairie’s goaltender, J.B. Davidson, struggled. He let three goals past him in the first period alone, including a power play goal. He also confronted 24 shots that period, versus only five for the Sharks goalie.
If there was a saving grace for the Legionnaires, it’s that they denied the Sharks a shutout.
Alden Tallman put the Legionnaires on the board at the 10:47 mark of the second frame, with Ira Gladue and Mike Gladue assisting on the play.
But any hopes for recovery were dashed when the Sharks put two more goals between the pipes in the same period. The Sharks also made 19 shots in the period compared 10 for the Legionnaires.
The third marked two more goals for the Sharks and a major penalty for the Legionnaires.
At the 15:47 mark, Brett Cunningham got into a dispute with a Shark. Cunningham received a two-minute penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct and a game misconduct.
He went to the dressing room, and Brydon Giroux served the two-minute penalty in his place.
As the clock ran out, the Sharks made 15 more shots on net, while the Legionnaires had only five. All told, the Sharks outshot the Legionnaires 58-20.
The Legionnaires now have a 1-4-1 record on the season. They will play their next game in Dawson Creek on Dec. 22 against the Canucks.
