Amy Drummond was awarded the 2007 High Prairie Healthcare Auxiliary Society bursary valued at $2,000 just before Christmas. Lois Couch, society president, presented Drummond with her cheque. Couch says the bursary is just one of many community functions the society provides each year. “We’re a group of volunteers - men and women - who work toward improving surroundings and conditions of healthcare for the patients of High Prairie Hospital, residents of J.B. Wood Continuing Care and clients of Community Health Services,” says Couch. To meet their goals the auxiliary society is involved in several activities. They include: * providing furnishings for patients and resident’s rooms. * providing special equipment for the care and treatment of patients, residents and clients. * refurnish and redecorate a palliative care room at the hospital. * purchasing supplies and stocking pop machines for patients, visitors and staff. * taking the supply cart around for patients for the purchase of treats and needs. * providing bursaries for persons training in a healthcare profession. * providing lunch and gifts and assisting staff with annual birthday parties at J.B. Wood and Pleasantview Lodge. * administering a memorial fund from donations received from families and friends. * providing an opportunity for members to meet, discuss and learn more about healthcare concerns. The auxiliary has been active for many years. They have purchased specialized equipment in the last five years including wheelchairs and cushions, an oxygen tester, walkers, an intravenous infusion pump, treadmill and a respirator machine. Couch adds $76,000 was also given for a new J.B. Wood bus. Couch says regular meetings are held in the Community Health conference room on the fourth Tuesday of January, March, May, September and November.

The Prairie River Raiders jumped out to a quick lead and never trailed in winning their season opener 51-39 over their crosstown rivals, the St. Andrew’s Saints. The game marked the first boy’s action in Smoky River Junior High School Basketball League action this season. PRJH led 19-8 after the first quarter. They used their speed and a lack of effort defensively at the St. Andrew’s end of the court in bolting out to a big lead. However, as the game wore on the Saints started to adjust. The bottom line was, for the last three quarters the teams were only one point apart. Nathan Lang-Oke- maw led all scorers with 19 points while Amadaus Giroux chipped in with 16 points of his own. Offensively, they did most of the damage. Jarett Abram and Zach Auger each had six points while Harold Johnson and Colin Bjornson netted two points each. Jared Dumont scored a team high 15 points for the Saints. The rest of the scoring was spread out between four players. Zak Stokes had nine points, Justin Monahan eight, Mike Ochran four and Josh Perry three points. Both teams head into the Christmas break and will not resume action until Jan. 9. The Raiders travel to McLennan to play the Eagles while the Saints play their home opener against Valleyview St. Stephen’s School.
