High Prairie Minor Hockey will have high representation on the Zone 8 hockey team for the Alberta Winter Games, with five of 19 positions being filled by local girls.
Ashley Laderoute, Mikayla Laderoute, Elisha Lamouche, Kirsten Noskey and Kylie Younghans made the cut.
The tryouts were held in Grovedale, Alta. over the Jan. 18-20 weekend where 87 players participated.
The Zone 8 team, which represents the Northwest Zone, held their first practice in Eaglesham Feb. 2-3.
Kylie Younghans was nervous about the tryouts, but she enjoyed them.
“All the kids were really fun,” says Younghans.
She likes team sports and expects the Alberta Winter Games to be a fun experience. She encourages other girls to try for events like this.
“Try hard and never give up. Even if you don’t think you have a chance, just keep going,” says Younghans.
Kirsten Noskey always feels nervous before tryouts, but she says they were fun. She was very excited to learn she made the cut.
“I thought I wasn’t going to make it. But then I (found) confidence in myself and I kept going,” says Noskey.
She is also going to play on the Team Alberta North Junior Female Team, which will go to Arctic Winter Games in Yellowknife March 9-15.
In addition, she plays for the Tolko Timberwolves.
Darcy Younghans, who coaches the Bantam Ticats and is Kylie’s father, commends the girls’ coaches for making it possible for them to play in the Alberta Winter Games.
“I think it’s a tribute to the coaches in High Prairie. The time they spend with the kids shows that we have a fairly strong female program. I think it’s going to continue into the future.”
The girls will get a sense of camaraderie with their teammates and how their skill level compares to other girls, he adds.
The Alberta Winter Games will take place in Leduc Feb. 13-18. They will consist of events like alpine skiing, hockey, ringette, volleyball, wrestling, boxing and bowling.
