Even on a gym floor, the High Prairie Regals are a tough team.
The third annual Regals versus Saints floor hockey game was held at St. Andrew’s School on Feb. 5. Ten students in Grades 11 and 12 played three games against a group of the Regals.
The Regals won all three games, 4-3 in the first, 8-4 in the second, and 12-7 in the third. However, these games, which ranged from 12 to 25 minutes in duration, were meant to be fun.
Cheers filled the gym repeatedly. One moment the students were yelling “Go Saints! Go!” and the next it was “Let’s Go Regals! Let’s Go!” Many of them even performed the human wave.
The Regals take satisfaction in participating in this event. This is defenceman Ryan Trimble’s first time playing, and he would like to play next year. Forward Lance Gauchier has played in all three years of the event.
“The kids look up to the Regals, and we’re representing the community,” says Gauchier.
Rob Levy, a Phys Ed teacher, says this event is a great idea because it brings the local hockey team to school events, and he hopes it encourages the younger students.
“It shows the younger kids that they should get involved in school events,” says Levy.
This was a fundraiser for St. Andrew’s School. Trudy Cardinal, a Grade 5/6 teacher, organized it, which included getting Regals hockey cards made for the students and others to purchase. The players autographed the cards for the students between games.
As of Feb. 5, Cardinal raised $450, and she expected to sell more cards at the Regals game on Feb. 7. The proceeds go to the St. Vincent’s Bablahaven Orphanage in Kerala, India. The school raised $1,000 from last year’s event.
Cardinal thanks all those who contributed to the creation of this year’s hockey cards, and the Regals for participating.
