High Prairie residents can expect a knock on their doors in the coming weeks, as ATCO Electric is distributing a magnetized emergency preparedness brochure.
Mel Beaudette, the district manager for ATCO Electric in High Prairie, held an open house in council chambers Feb. 13 to highlight the brochure.
It has information about things like evacuation procedures, summer and winter storms, influenza and preparing emergency kits, including one for pets. The company is also offering an emergency kit for a small fee.
“Emergencies are a reality. They do happen, and people should be prepared,” says Beaudette.
One kit on display was comprised of items like bottled water, a lantern flashlight, candles, a light stick, a can of tire sealant and jumper cables.
Councillor James Waikle, who is the chairperson for the protective services committee, welcomes the partnership between council and ATCO Electric.
“Anything that enhances public safety is a positive thing,” says Waikle. “With ATCO providing these kits, that helps the public with safety, and the brochure … increases awareness.”
Deputy fire chief John McDermott also attended the open house. He says this brochure helps as a civil defence resource.
“Knowledge is power. The more we know about what to do when the time comes, the better off we all are,” says McDermott.
He recommends other communities in the area distribute the brochure to their residents.
Beaudette says the company is willing to co-work with other municipalities and municipal districts on their own emergency kits.
The High Prairie and District 4-H Club and the Coyote Acres 4-H Club will be distributing the brochure to local residences in late February or early March. It can also be picked up at the town office.
