The E.W. Pratt Chargers boys’ basketball team has shot their last hoops for the season after losing 83-46 to La Crete and 77-64 to Peace River Glenmary in the 2A Boys Northwest Zones.
Pratt hosted the Glenmary Saints, High Level, La Crete, Manning Paul Rowe, Peace River High School Nomads and Spirit River in the 2A Boys Northwest Zones tournament March 7-8.
The Chargers played La Crete in their first game March 7 and lost 83-46. Both teams appeared to be evenly matched as La Crete held a 16-15 lead after one quarter. Geoffrey Beaudry scored seven of the Chargers’ 15 points.
However, La Crete took a commanding lead in the second quarter and never looked back, scoring 17 points on the Chargers, while the home team managed only nine.
Things got worse for the home team in the third quarter. David Olanski scored the only point for his team in that quarter, while LaCrete added 25.
The Chargers scored 22 points in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the huge deficit.
La Crete advanced to play against the Nomads in the championship game but lost 72-47.
The Chargers committed 26 fouls in the game compared to only 12 for La Crete.
The Chargers then played Glenmary on the morning of March 8 and lost 77-64. Again, the teams were evenly matched as Glenmary led 37-35 at the half.
Glenmary went on the offensive in the third quarter, outscoring the Chargers 22-10 to take command of the game.
Similar to the previous game, the Chargers were hampered by a lot of fouls, 25 in all. The Saints also had their share of fouls - 20.
Beaudry and Jessie Letendre were the leading scorers for the Chargers netting 23 and 22 points respectively.
Coach Maurice Beaudry says his team struggled with injuries in the game against La Crete. Andrew Gingerich suffered a badly bruised, hyper-extended elbow, but he played the next day. Matthew Robinson and Matthew Johansson were also hurt. All three players are starters for the team.
“That hurt us a bit for today (against Glenmary). But I’ve got to give these guys a heck of a lot of credit. They did a heck of a job,” says Beaudry.
He adds the Saints are a very good team, although his team still had a chance to beat them.
“Even without those starters, we had a chance. We were in there all the way. It was a 13-point loss, but that’s not much.”
He also says Jesse Letendre performed really well during the tournament, as he has all year, as did Geoff Beaudry.
“I thought a lot of our guys really stepped up,” says Beaudry. “It’s probably the best game we’ve played all year.”
