When it comes to inquisitive and scientific minds in today’s youth, it would be hard to argue the best minds are not being schooled at Prairie River Junior High School.
PRJH students earned five prizes at the Peace Regional Science Fair on NAIT’s Fairview Campus March 15.
“We took five fantastic projects to the fair and came home with three medals, one Award of Excellence and we tied for the School Participation Award,” says teacher Nancy Marquardt. “Five entries and five prizes!”
Kendall Carlson not only took home a gold medal in the Junior Engineering category for her Cerebral Palsy bike invention, she also received the Award of Excellence in Engineering, and a ticket to the national fair in Ottawa.
Meanwhile, Evan Griffiths won a gold medal in the Junior Health and Life category for her project looking at tropisms in plants.
Taylor Iwasiuk took home a silver medal in the same category for her thorough look at pink eye infections in cattle.
PRJH entered two other projects. Dana Barrons and Morgan Marquardt did a very cool and scary project looking at naturally occurring radioactive materials while Devon Quartly did a very comprehensive job on his project looking at the effects of household cleaners on egg proteins which are similar to the human eye.
Marquardt was proud of all students for the excellent job they did.
“All of our students did a great job representing High Prairie at the event and so a big round of congratulations to all of them,” she says.
