A heart-breaking 4-3 double overtime loss to Camrose ended the High Prairie PennWest TiCats hopes of winning gold medals at the Alberta Female Bantam “B” Provincials March 14-16 in Irma.
The TiCats went 2-1-1 in round-robin play before losing in the semi-final.
Coach Darcy Younghans was very pleased with the team’s efforts and says he told them after the game they had nothing to be ashamed of.
“We’re competing against communities with 70,000 people (Lethbridge),” says Younghans. “The girls played their hearts out and they have nothing to be ashamed of.”
He adds he could not think of one player who did not play well, despite the vigorous five-game schedule in only three days.
The Ti-Cats opened with a 5-4 win over host Irma. The Ti-Cats led 3-2 after the first period but it was Kylie Younghans’ goal with 4:54 left that broke a 4-4 tie. She also scored in the first period. Elisha Lamouche scored a pair of goals while Jessica Rose added the other.
Chloe Holt, Madison Fischer, Tessa Prior and Jolene MacKay replied for Irma.
Younghans was again the sparkplug in the second game. It was her goal with 1:38 left that gave the TiCats an important 3-3 tie against Edmonton.
Yondu Mori scored goals in the first and third periods for Edmonton while Brenley Caron’s first period goal gave Edmonton a short-lived 2-0 lead.
Mikayla Laderoute scored both TiCats’ goals before Younghans tied the game.Spruce Grove proved to be no contest as the TiCats qualified for the semi-finals after an easy 5-1 win.
Kara Noskey’s first period goal was the only scoring. Julie Roberts tied the game in the second period but Lamouche’s first of two goals proved to be the game-winner. Shelby Cunningham and Laderoute scored third period goals to ensure the win.
The Ti-Cats already had a semi-final berth in their pocket before their final round-robin game against Lethbridge, who defeated Camrose 8-4 in the final.
“They were the best team there,” says coach Younghans.
Rikia Penchuk’s first period goal gave the Ti-Cats some hope as it tied the game 1-1 but Lethbridge took a 3-1 lead before the end of the period and never looked back.
Sarah Weninger scored a hat-trick and added an assist to lead Lethbridge to victory. Allie Trimble added a pair while Jessie Trimble scored the other.
The semi-final was a fierce battle as the double overtime score indicates. Younghans gave the Ti-Cat the early lead only 6:26 into the first period but Danielle Juba tied the game only six seconds later at the 6:32 mark. Kelly-Anne Roberts gave Camrose the lead until Lamouche’s goal with 7:06 left in the period tied the game 2-2.
Laderoute gave the Ti-Cats the lead with the only goal in the second period. The club then held on until Kelsey Petryshyn’s goal with 11:27 left in the third tied the score.
The clubs battled through a scoreless fourth overtime before Sarah Hanson’s goal with 12:12 left sent Camrose to the finals.
