Having a passion for fishing and hunting, and knowing High Prairie needs a sporting goods store, Chris and Shelly Kruger will soon open Walleyes and Whitetails.
“With the lakes so close, and as we’re surrounded by wildlife, we wanted to offer (sporting goods) to the town. They don’t have anything like that here,” says Shelly Kruger.
They have spent the last few weeks renovating and cleaning up the former Red Basket convenience store, and have been scrambling to get their merchandise organized and put on shelves. Their prices will be comparable to stores like those in Grande Prairie, maybe even a little lower, says Chris Kruger.
They plan to sell hunting, archery and fishing equipment and accessories, as well as fishing and hunting licenses. Brand names the store will carry include BowTec, Leopold, Matthews and Remington. The store will sell only non-restricted firearms for the time being, although ammunition will also be available for sale.
The store will offer products to everyone, such as speciality clothing and other items for lady hunters, and guns and bows for children.
For those interested in trophies, the Krugers have arranged to display John Hiscox’s African safari trophies. Other local hunters will display their deer and moose trophies there, too.
The Krugers will sponsor local events, including the Golden Walleye Classic in the summer of 2008. They were one of the sponsors for the Slave Prairie Big Buck Night that was held at the Royal Canadian Legion March 8.
They have already found a lot of support for their business, and are eager to be part of the community.
“We’ve had nothing but support, and the feedback is incredible,” says Shelly Kruger. “We’re eager to share our passion with the public.”
The store will open April 7 or sooner, but the grand opening will be held on the Victoria Day long weekend in May. A barbecue and instore specials will be offered on opening day. Everyone spending over $100 will be eligible for a draw for a rifle. Visit the store for more details.
