A willingness to help others has earned the coach of the High Prairie Skating Club the Coach-of-the-Year award for the Peace Region in 2008. Rebecca “Becky” Zajic received the award at the Grande Prairie Figure Skating Competition March 29. “I was very excited to win it and I had no idea that I was even nominated,” says Zajic. Her award capped a terrific weekend for the club. They sent 14 skaters to Grande Prairie and had 18 top four finishes out of 25 events. “This weekend was a very exciting weekend for myself and my skaters,” says Zajic, in understating the club’s accomplishments. The award is presented to a coach in the Peace Region who contributes volunteer time in addition to professional time at the club. Also, to a professional coach who has demonstrated commitment to the development of the sport of figure skating at all levels through volunteer activities. The president of the High Prairie Skating Club says Zajic is highly deserving of the award and recognition for a job well done. “She is a dedicated Preschool, Canskate, Star Skate in juniors and seniors, and power skating coach,” says Tamara Strebchuk. “Becky is a coach who reflects the passion, spirit and triumph of figure skating in the Peace Region.” Strebchuk adds Zajic also reflects a superior level of commitment, dedication, hard work, and loyalty to the club. “On behalf of the members of this club and our skaters, we are very grateful to call her our coach,” says Strebchuk. Zajic was nominated for the award by Sheila Ghostkeeper of the neighboring Slave Lake club. In making the nomination, Slave Lake deserves credit and showed class despite the rivalry between the two communities. “Sheila basically said that this year Becky went over and beyond just her coaching roles,” says Strebchuk. “She made up solo routines for the Canskate children that attend the Funskate in Slave Lake in January. She is always willing to help any skater with their routine or with any questions they have.” Zajic, who continues to promote figure skating whenever possible, is called a positive role model for all skaters. Zajic is an active professional registered with Skate Canada. She possesses a NCCP Level 2, and has over 18 years of figure skating experience.
