Two Chinese residents were easily the class at the High Prairie Open Badminton Tournament held March 29-30. Dan Kai and Sun Yang breezed through the Men’s Singles A Division before meeting in the final, which Kai won easily. Kai and Yang are the reigning Canadian Colleges Athletics Association champions and attend college at NAIT in Edmonton. Yang was placed in the men’s division and easily defeated all her opponents before meeting Kai in a very entertaining final. Kai is from Xi-An and Yang from NaNing, China. Their arrival in town continued a long tradition of top-notch players attending the tournament. This year’s list of players reads like a champion’s list of CCAA, Alberta Schools Athletic Association and Peace Country high school champions including Jerry Smith, Tyler Plante and Crystal Elliott to name only a few. While the tournament is a competitive event, a lot of fun was had by all, who had their skills tested based on level of play. Organizers grouped players into divisions for similar level of play. Some of the new players, such as Judge Thomas Goodson, were lucky enough to be teamed with Kai for play in Men’s Doubles.
