L’Heureux wins Joussard byelection

Guy L’Heureux won a byelection April 17 to represent the M.D. of Big Lakes in Ward 6, or Joussard. While most were anticipating a close vote, L’Heureux won 142-52. It is a result which surprised even L’Heureux. L’Heureux defeated Myler Savill in the Oct. 15, 2007 municipal election 78-75. A third candidate, Trina Willier, picked up 33 votes. Savill contested the election based on the fact some people voted illegally. A hearing in Peace River Court of Queen’s Bench Feb. 20 confirmed Savill’s suspicions after Justice K.G. Nielsen ruled the election invalid. In turn, he ordered the byelection which the M.D. set for April1 7. L’Heureux increased his three-vote win in October 2007 to a resounding 90 votes in the April 17 vote.
