A Grade 7 girl will be enter into a drug and alcohol treatment program as soon as possible, her mother promised a High Prairie youth court judge April 14.
The girl pleaded guilty to breaking the Town of High Prairie’s curfew bylaw and failing to comply with a judge’s order during her short appearance.
“Through probation, I hope you can get her into treatment,” said youth court Judge J.C.M. Spence, who arrived from Edmonton to oversee proceedings.
The girl, whose name cannot be published because of provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was already on probation from charges Jan. 15. Crown prosecutor Fred Whiting told youth court the girls was caught in the Buchanan Lumber yard at 1:30 a.m. on an undisclosed date.
“. . .and couldn’t provide a reason for being there,” he added.
Her presence at Buchanan Lumber violated the town’s curfew bylaw.
The girl ran into further trouble Feb. 28.
“Police received a complaint … she and her friends were yelling and screaming and causing a disturbance,” said Whiting.
Youth court heard the girl was suspended from school earlier this year. Her mother then told Judge Spence about her daughter’s problems with drugs and alcohol.
Judge Spence chose to only fine the girl seeing her treatment was the more imperative issue. He fined her $50 for breaking curfew and $20 for snubbing youth court orders with time to pay granted to Sept. 1. Youth court heard she will work off the $50 fine and likely pay the $20 fine.
