Indoor rodeo rides high in the saddle
news2

Clint Cox, a cowboy from Peace River, rode “Uptown Girl” during the first day’s events. He was the only person to complete in the novice hors-riding category that day.

It was two days of breakaway roping, tie-down roping, bronco busting, steer wresting, steer riding, barrel racing and other activities. The 30th annual High Prairie Indoor Rodeo was held at the Agriplex on April 19 and 20, drawing cowboys and cowgirls from all over Alberta, and some from British Columbia as well. Each day’s activities opened with announcer Emery Erickson giving a tale of the Old West, the colours procession and Christopher Williscroft offering the Cowboy’s Prayer. Williscroft had a good weekend in the saddle. On the second day, he rode “Rassberry Wine” in the novice horse category and acquired 200 points and a jacket as first prize. In celebration, he jumped up on the fence by the audience, punched his fist in the air and yelled his excitement. Williscroft wants to participate in as many rodeos as possible this season, hopefully leading to the Wildrose Rodeo Association finals. He admits this is a “pretty big goal” for his first season in pro rodeo. However, he has the drive and ambition to make the rodeo circuit a profession. There were several children’s activities during the rodeo, including mutton busting on the second day. The tykes hung onto the sheep, but were eventually thrown to the soft ground.
