Christopher Williscroft is doing well in the rodeo circuit, placing fourth in the novice saddle bronc event in Mayerthorpe May 2-4.
This is an amateur rodeo event, and his second rodeo this season. On May 3, out of seven competing, only he managed to stay in the saddle for eight seconds.
“Sitting in fourth is still some pretty good points,” says Williscroft.
He rode “Rummy,” who was “quite scary to look at and get on,” but this ride gave him a big boost in confidence.
“Her back was over the top rail of the bucking chute, which was quite tall. She sorta popped me out of my saddle, which sorta messed me up. But then I recovered and got back. Once I covered her, I got on the ground.
“When I sat down with my mom, I got a big confidence boost. She told that was the Lakeland Rodeo Association Horse of the Year. That horse bucked most cowboys the previous year, so it definitely helped me say, ‘Hey, this is pretty good.’”
Williscroft competed at the 30th annual High Prairie Indoor Rodeo at the Agriplex April 19 and 20. He rode “Rassberry Wine” in the novice horse category, and he acquired 200 points and a jacket as first prize.
Williscroft has learned he does not have time to be scared. His only concern is the bucking chute.
“You’ve got to get on and go, because the most dangerous place is actually in the bucking chute. You can still get hurt out there in the arena, but when you’ve got two metal fences on both sides of you, you’re going to get smashed up if you don’t go.”
He will not be able to go to all of the rodeos this season, but wants to attend as many as possible and go to the finals. The amount of points required to advance to the finals will be determined near the end of the season.
Williscroft, an avid rodeo fan, wants to make the professional rodeo circuit his career.
