East Prairie rejoins fastball league

South Peace News

A short extension has been granted to High Prairie and District Fastball League teams to enter the league this season. In a somewhat surprising development, two teams with recent championships to their credit did not contact the league executive wishing to enter their team. The news prompted league president Peter Keay to extend the deadline to 5 p.m. May 12. “I’ll contact the teams and see what they want to do,” says Keay. The two teams in question are the Gift Lake Sluggers and Peavine Canadians. Another team in the league last season - the Sucker Creek Braves - also did not contact the league. The good news is that the Men’s Division continues to be healthy with at least eight teams in the league this season. Six teams from last year including Driftpile, the three-time defending champion Grouard 86’ers, Peavine Boyz, Peavine Rangers, Peavine Young Guns and Whitefish Lake Hawks are in the league again. Two new teams join the league this season including a team in Gift Lake coached by Hector Lamouche and East Prairie, which has not had a team in about 15 years. The Ladies Division is in a state of limbo. Only two teams expressed interest by the deadline including a team from High Prairie/Faust and the Peavine Girlz. Keay is waiting to see if any more interest arises. If not, he will contact the teams and see what they want to do. Last season, Gift Lake Just Cuz and the Whitefish Lake Lady Hawks comprised a four-team league. Schedules will be released later this week and published next week. The Men’s Division begins play Tuesday, May 20.
