Heather Daly and Linda Vanden Berg raise money for as many charitable causes as possible, including the province-wide Elks and Royal Purple Children’s Walk-For-Children.
They participated in the regional Walk-For-Children in Sexsmith May 10, which is a five-kilometre event, and presented $3,670 to the organizers. Daly raised $2,410, Vanden Berg $1,260.
The Sexsmith event raised $17,000 while the Alberta total was $59,000. The money is earmarked for the Elks and Royal Purple Fund, which supports The Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research.
Daly’s two great-nephews in Edmonton, Blake and Wyatt, use ISTAR’s services.
“They’ve seen huge improvements in their speech development,” says Daly, whose relatives donated to her fundraising efforts.
Daly received a certificate of appreciation for the Walker With The Most Pledges from the Elks and Royal Purple Children’s Walk-For-Children.
This is first time she has participated in this event and wants to again next year wherever it’s held. Daly supports other charitable causes through her work as a teacher at St. Andrew’s School.
This was also Vanden Berg’s first time in the Walk-For-Children. She found it a very positive experience.
“They were very welcoming in Sexsmith,” says Vanden Berg. “I really enjoyed it. It’s getting me out walking more and that’s always good.”
She adds everyone felt positive because of the amount of the money they raised and because they were getting back into the Walk-For-Children after a hiatus of several years.
Vanden Berg, who is a member of the Order of the Royal Purple, hoped to raise just $500 for the event and was very pleased to exceed her goal.
She hopes the Walk-For-Children will be held in High Prairie one day.
