Whether it was three-legged races, 100-metre races or other events, the students’ smiles, and their panting and puffing showed just how much fun they had.
Grouard Northland School hosted the annual Northland Games May 31. Approximately 580 students came from all over the Northland School Division. They were divided by age group, with those ages 5-10 participating in individual and team events at the west end of the school and those ages 11-18 using the track on the east side.
Besides the three-legged races, the students in the 5-10 age group participated in 40- and 80-metre races, a ball throw, standing long jump, soccer kick, barrel toss and sack races. The other group participated in the high and long jumps, discus and shot put, as well as 100-, 200-, 400- and 1,500-metre races.
John Edwards was one of the organizers. He says this is one of the bigger events Grouard has hosted. Many local parents and a couple of Kapown Rehabilitation Centre staff helped organize and run the Northland Games.
Edwards appreciates all the help and hopes students enjoyed the event.
“I hope they’re going to remain interested in staying in school and develop school spirit. It’s a chance to meet students from other communities,” says Edwards.
A silent auction and the school concession acted as fundraisers for the school’s Grade 9 graduation ceremony in June.
