Rangers wield heavy lumber

The Peavine Boyz were the last team to fall from the ranks of the undefeated June 24 as they lost a 13-8 decision to the Peavine Rangers in High Prairie Men’s Fastball League action. The 8-1 Rangers scored 12 runs in the first three innings and never looked back although the 7-1 Boyz settled down after a horrific start and made the game closer than it really was. Derek Shaw’s two-run blast gave the Boyz a short-lived 2-0 lead in the first inning. However, in the bottom of the first the Rangers scored four runs on only one hit – a three-run home run by Jay Anderson. Al Anderson walked, Rocky Collins reached on an error and Travis Chalifoux walked before Jay Anderson’s blast. All the runs were unearned. The Rangers added five runs in the second inning on five hits. Al Anderson and Jesse Smith each clubbed two-run home runs while Rocky Collins doubled in the other run. The Rangers tacked on four more runs in the third. Al Anderson’s double knocked in two runs while Rocky Collins hit a two-run homer. The Boyz downturn was an unusual subpar effort from pitcher Lindsay Cunningham, probably the league’s best pitcher so far this season. His changeup was missing the plate badly so Rangers hitters simply zoned in on his fastball. When it came, they had little trouble adjusting and hit Cunningham hard. By the time Cunningham found his game in the fourth inning, it was too late. In fact, Cunningham gave up only three hits and one run after the third inning. The Boyz made it closer on an Edward Collins homer in the fourth. A couple wild pitches and an RBI single from Lindsay Cunningham allowed the Boyz to score twice in the fifth. They added two more runs in the sixth on Chris Noskey’s RBI double and a single run in the seventh on Stewart Cunningham’s RBI groundout. Travis Chalifoux doubled in the Rangers other run in the fifth inning. Clint Cunningham pitched the final three innings for the win. He took over from starter Jay Anderson, who pitched the first four innings. Lindsay Cunningham went the distance and suffered the loss. He gave up 13 runs on 13 hits. Four of the runs were unearned. Following are the standings in the Women’s and Men’s divisions. Scores are slow in coming in. All teams are asked to phone in scores to update standings as soon as possible. Teams are also reminded to enter the Darlene Courtorielle Memorial Touranment July 12-13 at Jaycee Park in High Prairie. Eight men’s teams at $400 and 10 mixed slo-pitch teams at $300 will be accepted. Call Ralph Courtorielle at 523-8386 to enter.
