High Prairie recognized a part of its long and proud history Sept. 13 with the dedication of Historic Prairie River Park. A small crowd gathered at the location in High Prairie’s northeast end to celebrate the occasion. “Historic Prairie River Park will help to bring attention to the early history of High Prairie and the first homesteaders that got title to their land,” read Donald Fevang in a prepared statement. It was Fevang’s grandparents who came to the exact location 100 years ago to settle. Fevang and Violet Komisar began thinking several years ago that High Prairie and area should try in some way to commemorate the Prairie River Settlement, which led to the founding of the Prairie River Business Centre in 1908 and later, High Prairie. “I want to give a very special thank you to Violet for her ideas in planning the design of this point-of-interest sign and for providing much of the information,” says Fevang. “This sign acknowledges my grandparents and the many other settlers who started coming to this area in 1903 and who began making this progressive town and farming community what it is today.” In 1908, Soren and Anna Fevang allowed nine acres of their quarter to be used for the Prairie River Business Community. Fevang thanked High Prairie town council for acknowledging this 2008 centennial and providing the historical Prairie River sign and park for the enjoyment of all citizens. Tammy Kaleta, owner of de Signs by Tam, produced the eye-catching sign which all agreed was very well done.
