Playing video games leads to assault

Playing video games brought out the worst in friends, High Prairie provincial court heard during testimony Sept. 15. Earl Leonard Ominayak, 26, pleaded guilty to assault after he struck his friend repeatedly after he no longer wanted to play, Crown prosecutor Cameron Jose told Judge E.J. Simpson. “(The victim) no longer wanted to play,” said Jose. “They began arguing and he struck him multiple times in the face.” The victim was cut and received a black eye. Duty counsel lawyer Ivan Ladouceur appeared in court with Ominayak and admitted the facts with one important addition. “Alcohol was involved,” he said. “I would hope there would be,” said Judge Simpson. “They’re good friends but it got carried away,” said Ladouceur. Judge Simpson told Ominayak he was fortunate. “If Mr. Jose had asked to send you to jail that’s where you’d be going,” said the judge. Instead, Ominayak was fined $920 including victim fine surcharge with time to pay granted to Jan. 2, 2009.
