HPE planning for annual Terry Fox Run
news4

Each year High Prairie Elementary School students take part in the Terry Fox Run. This year, Sept. 26 all students will be asked to bring a Toonie to support the Terry Fox Run. In past years, and again this year, each class will be taking a walk on the walking trails at Jaycee Park. All Toonies collected will be forwarded to the Canadian Cancer Society in pursuit of Terry Fox’s dream of finding a cure for cancer. Above, the 2006 photo shows students promoting the run. Beginning in the top right and proceeding clockwise are HPE students Madison Nesom, Bojan Gaudet, Tanner Stokes and Ricky Peters.

Sonya Deynaka and Jake Poloz
HPE Reporters

Hi! This is Sonya Deynaka and Jake Poloz from the High Prairie Elementary Peer group. Kindergarten is off to a great start! They were able to capture their escaped gingerbread men and are looking forward to an exciting year! Grade 2RR is happy to be back at school. They are busy reviewing and making numbers to 100. They are also learning what good readers do. Ask your child what a good reader does. They can tell you! In Grade 2R they are excited to start a new learning year. They are having fun reading about pirates and learning about maps. They are also testing to see what magnets are attracted to and that bar magnets have a north and south pole just like our map. Grade 2D students are really excited to have started a new grade. They are attracted to their new unit on magnets in science and are working on sorting and patterns in math. In Grade 3B they are diving into Grade 3 jobs and are especially excited about rocks and minerals and their class secret! Grade 4S are great recycling assistants on Thursday afternoons. They are discovering one way to decrease the amount of waste in our landfill. Grade 4/5P is excited to begin their Weather Watch and Recycling projects this year. Science is not only fun and interesting but a great opportunity to work together to care for our environment! Grade 5S students are observing the sky in their study of weather. In Grade 6M they are off to an interesting start. One of their favourite subjects is Ancient Greece. They are studying gods and mythical creatures and reading a spell-binding novel about this called, ‘The Lighting Thief’. Grade 6C have just finished a great novel called ‘A Goal in Sight’ by Jacqueline Guest. The students are very excited to meet and listen to Guest when she comes to the town library Oct. 3.

Terry Fox Run
On Friday, Sept. 26, students and staff will take part in our annual Terry Fox run in memory of this brave young man who lost his battle with cancer. In the words of Terry, “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.” Let’s keep it going! Everyone is encouraged to donate a “Toonie for Terry” with all the money collected being forwarded to the Canadian Cancer society to aid in their research projects. Thanks, everyone!

Peer group news
Our Grade 6 peer group is on the lookout for ways to help others! This year, their efforts will go toward helping the Sucker Creek Women’s Shelter. Their first fundraising effort kicks off at our school open house Sept. 23. Place your bid at their Silent Auction table full of great items! Thanks for your support fro the students and staff at HPE!
